I am a theatre director with 20 years’ experience. My shows aim to encourage empathy towards those marginalised by society through telling powerful stories in dynamic ways. Examples include:

- Exploring the challenges faced by those who claim asylum in the UK by shutting the audience in a steel shipping container in the Fringe First and Amnesty International Award-winning The Container.

- Finding a sense of hope in the lives of older people in a care home through a giant immersive living room in Home Sweet Home (**** The Guardian).

- Believing in the potential of young offenders in Blake Remixed (“an entertaining fusion of hip hop, rap and beatboxing,” The Stage)

- Brief Encounters at Bradford Interchange a promenade performance around the city’s main transport hub celebrating the city as a space for inter-cultural meetings. (“For a long time it felt like Bradford had had its heart ripped out. This play gives the city its heart back.” ***** The Yorkshire Post).

My process is tailored to each individual project but is based on creating a safe space for my collaborators to explore, play and excel, while drawing all the elements together through dialogue and mutual respect to tell the story in the clearest and most compelling way possible. This approach is inspired by my Buddhist mentor Daisaku Ikeda and my 15 years-experience as a lay leader in SGI-UK.

I use the experience I have gleaned from leading over 70 high-pressure creative projects and productions to facilitate workshops for corporate clients on public speaking, leadership, communications skills and creativity. Previous clients include PWC, Slaughter and May, British Airways, Taylor Wessing, BC Partners, Carlsberg, the University of York and Ahli Bank. I am one of the core trainers for Flying Cloud.

I am also a qualified coach. In coaching, as with directing, I have seen repeatedly the power of trusting and enabling someone to use their own inner wisdom to make decisions and make progress towards their goals.

‘I had a fantastic experience working with Tom. I felt immediately at ease and was able to talk through the challenges I face with honesty. Tom's questions and tools really quickly helped me find some practical solutions to surmount obstacles that were holding back my career.’
